What is Gmax testing?

Gmax testing for sports surfaces is measuring the impact attenuation (ability of surfaces to absorb shocks due to impact) of surfaces, both Artificial turfs (Synthetic turfs) and Natural turfs. Gmax is the ratio of the maximum acceleration during an impact to the Acceleration due to gravity. If the Gmax ratio is higher for a surface, it means that the ability of the surface to absorb shocks are poorer.

Regardless of the level of play, providing the safest fields for athletes is our #1 priority

Players on any athletic field are exposed to some risk of injury. It is now well established that approximately 10-15% of concussions in football are caused by head-to surface contact.

To provide a better screening of the field heterogeneity

The Labosport impact testing service checks up to 49 locations on the field

(Including 6 to 10 testing locations mandatory for ASTM protocols)

  • Applies to both synthetic and natural turf, this service gives a field map indicating precisely the strengths and weaknesses of the entire field .
  • Providing useful information for the sport field manager and maintenance team.
  • This mapping can be done with the Gmax or AAA depending on client needs and expectations.

  • ASTM F1936

Prescribes procedures and reporting requirements for impact attenuation tests of turf playing systems. By reference, it incorporates the equipment requirements of Standard F355. It shows the suggested test point locations for a number of sport-specific field configurations. It also includes a protocol for dealing with multi-sport fields.
