What does a cricket wicket assessment measure?

  • Pace: the proportion of ball speed retained after impact;
  • Bounce: the vertical response of the ball after impact;
  • Uniformity: variation in pace and bounce between test locations;
  • Surface hardness or stiffness: an indicator influenced by compaction, moisture and the soil profile;
  • Moisture content: measured across the wicket to identify gradients or localised wet and dry areas;
  • Surface levels and regularity: detection of local deviations that may affect ball behaviour;
  • Grass cover and sward condition: including density, height, uniformity and bare areas;
  • Soil and profile condition: potentially including texture, clay characteristics, organic matter, root development and compaction;
  • Visual condition: cracking, footmarks, surface disturbance, disease and wear.

The value comes from analysing these parameters together. For example, a slow area should not be diagnosed from pace data alone: it may be associated with higher moisture, lower hardness, uneven grass cover or a local profile issue.

Which standards apply to cricket field assessment?

It is important to distinguish between different types of requirement. There is no single document that should be presented as a universal numerical pass/fail standard for every natural-turf wicket.

The Laws of cricket

The Laws define the field and the way it is used during a match. These are rules of the game rather than a complete technical performance specification for wicket construction or objective pace-and-bounce testing.

Cricket Australia’s Community Cricket Facility Guidelines provide planning and technical guidance for community facilities, including natural and synthetic fields. ICC field and outfield ratings

For international cricket, the ICC receives a post-match field and outfield rating from the appointed Match Referee for every Test, ODI and T20I. A field rated unsatisfactory or unfit is considered substandard, and sanctions may apply. When should a wicket be tested?

Testing can provide useful evidence at several stages:

  2. during commissioning or handover of a new or reconstructed wicket;
  3. when players or officials report slow, low or inconsistent behaviour;
  4. before and after changes to watering, rolling or grass-management practices;
