Labosport Group is pleased to announce that Professor David James, Managing Director of Labosport UK, has been presented an honorary lifetime ISEA Fellowship Award from the International Sports Engineering Association (ISEA), in acknowledgment of his outstanding contributions to sports engineering.
ISEA Fellowship
ISEA is a prestigious community of industry and academic researchers covering all sports and a broad spectrum of engineering and technology disciplines. Fellows must have a minimum of 10 years active participation in the ISEA, and engage in sports engineering through academic publications, technology development or engineering application.
James defined the recognition as a “humbling experience–for once I was left speechless at the awards ceremony.” He said, “although I am only mid-way through my career, I take great satisfaction in this recognition of the positive impact of my work.”
Known for his energy and dedication, James is recognized for his research and knowledge sharing through innovative projects with sports associations, corporations, and federations. In addition to his current work at Labosport, James has led research and knowledge transfer projects for 30 different organisations, including Adidas, FIFA, ITF, UK Sport, Honda Racing Corporation and the Football Foundation.
His leadership has produced significant research outputs, including Olympic sport data intelligence, impact performance of electronic player tracking systems, goal line technology testing, turf splash measurement, the effects of atmospheric conditions on cricket ball trajectories, and offside technology homologation.
James is an authority on athlete-surface and ball-surface interactions. His expertise has earned him global recognition, and led to an increase in demand for his technical knowledge at sports engineering conventions around the world.
He contributes to hundreds of digital and print publications, including magazines, books and peer-reviewed journals such as Sports Engineering, the British Medical Journal (BMJ), Sports Biomechanics, and the Journal of Sports Engineering and Technology. His technical expertise and research is discussed on broadcast TV and radio, including the BBC, Sky Sports, ABC, Al Jazeera, and ITV.
James has provided written and oral evidence to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, and has worked as an ambassador on countless committees throughout the UK.
For over two decades, James has helped to develop and train students. Most recently, he supervised research into characterising player movement on hybrid football turf (funded by Adidas), the effects of traction on lower limb injury in football, and traction mechanisms in synthetic turf.
James is one founder of the pan-European sports engineering education alliance (a4see.com), which draws together leading universities in sports engineering to provide exchange opportunities, share best practice and enhance educational standards.
ISEA meets every 2 years for a conference where authors submit research articles, and selected papers are chosen for presentations. The ISEA community is thriving and its 14th conference was hosted by the Ray Ewry Sports Engineering Center at Purdue University on 6 – 9 June, 2022. The next conference will be at Loughborough University in July 2024.
